Canada port strikes could see congestion and shift to airfreight

Ongoing strike action at the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert in Canada hasn’t yet resulted in a shift of cargo from sea to air, but there could be disruption to supply chains yet, the Airforwarders Association (AfA) has warned. Read more here

Carriers start diverting ships from Canada’s strike-hit west coast ports

Ocean carriers are closely watching developments in the 10-day Canadian west coast port strike before finalising network changes, although some service alterations have begun.
Although talks between the employers, British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), and the ILWU were reported to have resumed at the weekend, under the auspices of federal mediators, the two sides look as far apart as ever from agreeing a new labour contract. Read more here

The ITS Logistics Port/Rail Ramp Freight Index shows nothing but a sea of red, and the fuel heating up this dumpster fire is the reconsignment of containers once bound for Canada, which will now be unloaded in the United States. Read more here

Maersk revises Panama Canal Charge

Maersk has announced the revision of the Panama Canal Charge (PCC) for cargo transiting through the Panama Canal effective from 3 August 2023.
The Danish box line said the new tariff levels will be US$175 per 20’ container and US$305 per 40’ container (incl. high cube & 45’ boxes)

Drivers violating hours of service rules face fines

Enforcement officers will be able to impose fines to drivers or companies who violate the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations.
The change was made possible by amending the Contraventions Regulations, which provided new ways to spell out contraventions in the Hours of Service, including the amount of fines. Read more here
